Hi, I’m Melanie, a Registered Dental Hygienist, Dental Hygiene Instructor, and Certified Myofunctional Therapist with over 12 years of experience in the dental field. My passion for myofunctional therapy began with my own experiences as a child struggling with myofunctional disorders, and it has grown even deeper through helping my three children on their own myofunctional journeys.
Through both personal and professional experience, I’ve seen how airway health, breathing patterns, and oral function are deeply connected to overall wellness. I’m passionate about identifying the root causes of dysfunction rather than just treating symptoms — helping patients of all ages achieve optimal breathing, sleep, and balance through individualized therapy.
When I’m not teaching or seeing patients, you’ll find me at home on our small hobby farm, enjoying time with my family, or in the kitchen cooking and baking from scratch — a reflection of my love for simple, nourishing living.
My mom sent me this old polaroid she had found. I was 6 years old and the oral surgeon took my picture. This was the day of my tongue-tie release. This was the first day of my airway journey. As a child I was a chronic mouth breather, always had some sort of throat infection, and terrible allergies. The dentist at the time had mentioned that I was tongue-tied, but their reason for recommending the surgery was due to a concern that I would have speech problems if not released. Although this is a valid concern, I look back now and realize the significance of this procedure for the benefit of my airway health. As we are all understanding now, being tongue-tied or having low muscle tone in the tongue has a huge impact in our ability to be an efficient nasal breather. As I got older, I still was plagued by headaches, severe allergies, and always felt my throat was swollen. My next step in my airway journey was braces as an adult and having my tonsils removed when I was 29 years old. With these key components and my knowledge of myofunctional therapy, I feel like I can BREATHE again. Looking at this picture reminds me of the importance of catching these myofunctional disorders early and encourages me to continue with improving my own kid's airway health as well as all my clients. #affinitymyo #myofunctionaltherapy
